My desktop has started going blank after a windows automatic update

Original Title: desktop goes blank
Hello.
I am having a problem with the desktop going blank.
It will go blank at anytime with out any warring at all.
The only thing that's left on the monitor is the curser, a rowe of buttons at the bottom, sometimes along with a button at the lower left
corner that say DONE.
I push that and nothing happens.
This started after a windows automatic download.
The icons are gone and no picture just a brite white screen.
Can you help??

·        By “Windows automatic download” do you mean to say “Windows Updates”? If so, then which
updates were installed on the computer after which the issue started?
Try the following steps and check if it helps:
Step 1:
Check the status of the issue in safe mode.
Let us know if the issue persists in safe mode.
Start your computer in safe mode
Step 2:
If the issue does not occur in safe mode then, place the computer in a clean boot state and troubleshoot the issue.
You can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.
This kind of startup is known as a
"clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

(Step 1: Perform a clean boot)
